Croda International Upgrades to BIOdek™ for better BOD/COD reduction and improved operational efficiency
Replacing failing random media with a BIOdek solution designed, built and installed by 2H Water Technologies has helped chemicals manufacturer, Croda International plc. achieve its BOD/COD reduction targets at the company’s wastewater treatment plant in Goole, Yorkshire.
Croda International plc creates, manufactures and supplies high-performance specialist chemical ingredients for use in the production of a diverse range of products.Croda is renowned for its practical commitment to sustainability, which the company regards as central to its business strategy. The company has featured as one of the ‘Top 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World’ for several years in succession.
Suez Industrial Solutions was contracted by Croda International plc to modernise the existing wastewater treatment facility at its headquarters in Goole, Yorkshire. Suez Industrial Solutions commissioned 2H Water Technologies to upgrade the plant’s two biofilters, both of which contained random media that had become blinded with solids.
2H was tasked with providing a solution that would reduce COD/BOD by up to 41% and 56% respectively and guarantee process performance improvements based on the following:
Average influent flow: 800m3/day
Influent COD: 2,174kg/day
Influent BOD: 1,152 kg/day
The BIOdek Solution
MEDIA TYPE: BIOdek KFP627 cross flow and KVP vertical flow media
MEDIA SURFACE AREA: 125m2/m3
MEDIA VOLUME: 2,376m3
MEDIA BED DEPTH: 3.6m
2H Water Technologies designed, built and installed a solution based on a combination of BIOdek cross flow and vertical flow structured plastic media. 2H brought the project to a successful conclusion in summer 2016 when the second biofilter became operational.
BIOdek the ideal biofilm carrier
BIOdek structured plastic media is highly durable, has a large surface area and can be used to construct modules with the optimal compressive strength, high void volume and large specific surface area needed to deal with higher organic loadings. A BIOdek installation is easy to operate and requires low levels of energy, supervision and capital expense.
Purpose built to be effective
The BIOdek media is configured to improve influent distribution through all the media, reduce the potential for blockage and maximise biomass population. The BIOdek crossflow media sits at the top to distribute the flow and load to the vertical media where the majority of treatment takes place. The open channels allow easy discharge of the decaying biomass.
